In a city where a kasavu mundu is read at a glance and a temple-border saree is judged on the quality of its gold, a Banarasi saree has to be genuinely well made to earn a place in the wardrobe — which is exactly why so many of our Kerala orders come from repeat buyers and their families.

Three certifications, not a sticker
The GI tag confirms Varanasi origin, the Silk Mark confirms pure mulberry silk, and the Handloom Mark confirms it was woven by hand. We can show you the registration for any saree you are considering.
No middlemen between you and the karigar
We work with weaving families in Lallapura, Madanpura, Alaipura and Jaitpura — the same families for four generations. If you ask which household wove your saree, we will tell you.
Handwoven, with the marks to prove it
A single saree takes between two weeks and a month and a half on a pit loom. Turn it over and you will see slightly raised threads and small irregularities between motifs — the signature of hand weaving, absent on a machine copy.
Zari that ages instead of shedding
Genuine zari feels faintly rough and metallic and darkens gently over the years. Plastic-coated imitation feels slippery and leaves a gold tint on your fingers. We will walk you through the test on a call.

Weddings, Onam, and a coastal climate
Kochi's calendar is generous with occasions and demanding on fabric. The city sits at sea level with humidity that rarely drops below comfortable, which changes what a silk saree should be — not whether you should wear one, but which weave you should choose.
For the muhurtham and the reception, heavy Katan silk still wins: the structured drape holds pleats through a long day and reads beautifully under hall lighting. For a daytime nalangu, a Christian wedding morning at a church in Fort Kochi, or an Onam sadya with family, a lighter Kora, Organza or Georgette Banarasi Saree is far more comfortable and far less likely to cling. Our Kerala buyers tend to pick off-white and gold for temple visits and Onam, deep reds and wine for weddings, and the pastel Kora shades for Vishu and engagement functions.
One practical note for this coast: silk and monsoon humidity do not mix well in a plastic cover. Wrap the saree in cotton muslin so it can breathe, keep it in a dry cupboard away from an outer wall, air it for an hour every few weeks between June and September, and refold it along a different line every few months so the zari never creases permanently in one place. Do that and a Banarasi saree bought in Kochi today will still be wearable at the next generation's wedding.

Which Banarasi silk is best for Kochi's humid coastal weather?
For daytime functions in Kochi, Kora, Organza and Georgette silk are the most comfortable — they are lighter, breathe better and do not cling in humidity. Keep heavy Katan silk with dense zari for the muhurtham, reception or an air-conditioned hall, where its structured drape shows best.
What does a genuine Banarasi saree cost in Kochi?
Lightweight Organza and Georgette Banarasi sarees begin around ₹21,000, Kora silk sits between ₹35,000 and ₹45,000, and handwoven Katan silk with heavy zari runs from ₹50,000 upward depending on weave and zari coverage. Anything sold as pure silk with real zari below ₹8,000 is almost certainly a power-loom copy.
How should I store a silk saree in Kochi's humidity and monsoon?
