Black came late to the Indian occasion wardrobe and then took it over. For a generation of women dressing for receptions, sangeets and city evenings rather than temple mornings, it does something no colour can: it removes every decision at once. The Black Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is that piece — a true black on Art Cotton Mix Silk, woven in Varanasi to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. Against it, gold zari reads brighter than on any other ground, every blouse colour becomes a deliberate choice, and the drape itself does all the work.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a weighted, architectural fall — which matters more here than anywhere else in the range, because black shows a drape and nothing else. There is no colour, no shift and no pattern to distract from how the cloth hangs, so the fall becomes the whole product. The soft matte finish is equally important: a black with a hard shine reads as synthetic immediately, while a muted surface keeps it looking like cloth rather than plastic.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. Black is the most demanding ground for motif work — every element sits at maximum contrast, so spacing, alignment and zari security are all plainly visible in a way no other shade allows. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot, which matters because two blacks from different dye lots rarely match.
Design Inspiration: The Black Palette
Black is the newest arrival in a very old palette, and its appeal is contemporary rather than traditional: it belongs to receptions, cocktail evenings and city functions rather than to temple ceremonies. Some families avoid it for pujas and auspicious daytime occasions, which is worth knowing before choosing it for a wedding morning — but for an evening event it is unmatched. Gold and antique gold read brightest against it; silver and diamond keep it sharp and modern; and a strong contrast blouse in rani pink, gold, red or ivory turns the same drape into a different look entirely. Occasion & Styling Guide
• Receptions & Cocktail Evenings: Where black belongs — silver, diamond or antique gold jewellery and a tonal or gold blouse.
• Maximum Zari Contrast: Gold work reads brighter against black than against any other ground — the reason to choose it over navy or charcoal.
• Work & Formal Events: Straightforward for conferences and professional functions with minimal jewellery.
• Worth Knowing: Some families avoid black for pujas and auspicious daytime ceremonies. For those occasions, a deep maroon, bottle green or aubergine gives similar depth without the question.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Blacks are checked particularly closely for dye-lot consistency between saree and blouse piece.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the depth and protect the zari; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — black bleeds heavily — and never bleach, which turns black a patchy brown rather than lightening it evenly.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. Black shows lint, dust and stray fibres more than any other shade, so keep the wrapping cloth clean and lint-free.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, which are most visible of all on black, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
