The Colour That Never Dates
SKU-47662
Every decade brings a shade that everyone wears and then quietly stops wearing. Bottle green has never been one of them. Pull out a family album and it turns up in the seventies, the nineties and last winter, looking equally correct in each — because it was never a trend to begin with, only a fixture of the Banaras palette. The Bottle Green Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is that fixture, woven in Varanasi in Art Cotton Mix Silk to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. If a saree is going to live in a cupboard for twenty years and come out for the important days, this is a shade that will still look considered when it does.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a weighted, structured fall — which a deep shade depends on, since there is no colour brightness to draw attention away from an uneven drape. The blend is also the practical end of the range: light enough on the shoulder for a full evening, quick to pleat, and resilient across repeat wear rather than a single outing. The soft matte surface holds the green as depth rather than gloss.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. Dark grounds put every motif in high contrast, so spacing that a mid-tone would forgive shows clearly here. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot, so the stitched blouse holds the same depth as the drape.
Design Inspiration: The Bottle Green Palette
Bottle green has stood opposite maroon in Varanasi weaving for as long as the two colours have been dyed — the pair that appears across trousseau sarees, temple hangings and festival dress without ever needing to be justified. It is ceremonial but not bridal, formal but not severe, and it belongs to no particular age group or season. Gold is its default partner; rani pink, mustard and ivory each give it a different character as a contrast blouse. Within our wider Banarasi saree range it is the most traditional of our greens, and the one least likely to look like a period piece in ten years.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Weddings & Receptions: Gold jewellery, gold or tonal blouse — full ceremonial weight without wearing red.
• Festive & Puja Wear: Auspicious and formal, appropriate across ages, with traditional jhumkas and bangles.
• A Long-Term Wardrobe Piece: The shade to choose if the saree is meant to be worn for years rather than a season.
• On Evening Light: Bottle green deepens towards near-black under low lighting. For a green that stays visibly green after dark, our teal is the better choice.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Very deep greens photograph close to black — the piece in your hands will read greener in daylight than it does on screen.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the depth and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — deep greens bleed onto lighter fabrics — and never bleach, which dulls green dyes faster than most.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. If the saree is being kept long term, air it once a year and refold along fresh lines.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks in regular use to prevent permanent crease lines, which show sharply on dark shades, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
