The Third Deep Saree You Buy
SKU-47972
Formal saree wardrobes tend to build in the same order. Maroon comes first, because it is never wrong. Black or navy follows, for the evenings maroon feels too traditional. Then comes the question of what else can carry a reception without repeating either — and the answer, more often than not, is a deep purple. The Dark Purple Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is that third piece: woven in Varanasi in Art Cotton Mix Silk to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection, deep enough for any evening function, and rare enough that it will not be duplicated across the room.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a weighted, architectural fall — which a deep shade depends on, since there is no brightness to draw the eye away from an uneven drape. The soft matte finish keeps the purple reading as depth rather than sheen; at this saturation a glossy synthetic tips quickly into looking theatrical. Light enough on the shoulder for a full evening, fast to pleat, and durable across repeat wear.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. Deep grounds put every motif in high contrast, so alignment and spacing that a mid-tone would absorb are plainly visible here. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot — purples are particularly prone to dye-lot variation, and a half-tone difference between blouse and drape is immediately obvious.
Design Inspiration: The Deep Purple Palette
Purple has always been the colour of consequence — historically the hardest dye to make, and still the shade that signals occasion without needing brightness to do it. In an Indian wardrobe its practical value is scarcity: at a reception full of reds, golds and blacks, a deep purple registers immediately as a deliberate choice rather than a default. It takes gold and antique gold as comfortably as silver, and contrast blouses in gold, wine, ivory or deep teal all hold against it. Within our wider Banarasi saree range it sits at the deep end of the purple family — well past our lavender, and beside the dual-tone purple where a second colour is carried through the weave.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Evening Receptions & Weddings: Antique gold jewellery and a gold or tonal blouse — full formality, and distinct from the room.
• When Maroon and Black Are Already Taken: The natural third deep shade for a wardrobe that already covers the obvious two.
• Festive Wear: Diwali and family celebrations — traditional jhumkas and bangles need nothing added.
• Contrast Styling: Gold or ivory for a classical reading; deep teal or wine for something less expected.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Deep purples photograph unreliably — screens frequently render them closer to black or to blue than they appear in daylight.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the depth and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — deep purples bleed heavily — and never bleach, which turns the shade a dull brown rather than lightening it.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. Dark grounds show lint readily, so keep the wrapping cloth clean.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, which show sharply on dark shades, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
