Wine In One Light, Ink In Another
SKU-44647
Purple is the one colour on the wheel that belongs to both halves — part red, part blue, never settled. That is what makes it the most rewarding base for a dual-tone weave: where the effect on a green or a maroon shows as one shade deepening, on a dark purple it can swing the colour’s whole character. The Dark Purple Dual Tone Art Silk Saree from The Panaya reads as a warm wine across the flat of the pallu and cools towards ink in the folds, and shifts again between daylight and lamplight. Woven in Varanasi in Art Cotton Mix Silk to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection, it is the most visually active piece in our dual-tone range.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give this saree a weighted, even fall, which a dual-tone effect depends on — the shift only reads properly across clean, consistent folds. The blend’s soft matte surface is the right finish for a deep purple: a high-shine synthetic in this shade tips straight into looking costume, while a muted surface holds it as depth. Light enough on the shoulder for a full evening, quick to pleat, and hard-wearing enough for repeat use.
The Craftsmanship: The Dual-Tone Weave
The two colours are interlaced yarn by yarn during weaving, so the effect lives in the construction of the cloth itself — there is nothing on the surface to rub away, wash out or fade at a different rate to the rest. Purple is the least forgiving base for this: because the two tones sit on opposite sides of warm and cool, any inconsistency in tension or beat shows up as visible banding rather than a soft drift. This piece comes from the same Varanasi cluster as our finer silks and passes the same checks — even selvedges, consistent colour play from pleats to pallu, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse. The blouse piece is cut from the same lot and carries the identical shift.
Design Inspiration: The Dual-Tone Dark Purple Palette
Deep purple has always signalled occasion without needing to shout, and the dual-tone treatment gives it something a flat purple cannot manage — movement. The colour stays legible under artificial light, where solid dark shades tend to close up, and it photographs with real dimension rather than as a block. Gold and antique gold are its natural partners; silver and oxidised pull it towards the cooler tone if that is the reading you want. Within our wider Banarasi saree range it is the deepest point of the purple family — further along than our lavender pastel and richer than our plain purple, and the most dramatic of our dual-tone pieces.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Evening Weddings & Receptions: Where the colour shift is at its most visible — antique gold jewellery and a tonal or gold blouse.
• Sangeet & Cocktail Functions: Moves well under mixed lighting, which is exactly where flat dark shades fall silent. Silver or diamond jewellery for a sharper reading.
• A Rich Alternative to Red: Full ceremonial depth for guests and close family who would rather not wear red or maroon.
• Choose the Blouse Deliberately: A warm blouse (wine, gold) pulls the saree red; a cool one (charcoal, ink) pulls it blue. One saree, two quite different looks.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree with a dual-tone weave — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch. Dual-tone purples are the hardest shade in the range to photograph faithfully — screens tend to push the colour towards one tone or the other, so the piece in your hands will read differently from the image. That shift is the nature of the weave, not a variation in the product.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes so both tones hold evenly and the zari finish is protected; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — deep purples bleed heavily — and never bleach, which attacks the two dyes at different rates and collapses the colour play.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a breathable cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. Refold rather than leaving the same face exposed, since uneven light fades one tone faster than the other and the imbalance is obvious on purple.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, which show sharply on dark shades, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
