Named for the Ceremony It Was Made For

Mehendi green is not an abstract colour name. It is the shade of the paste itself — warm, yellow-toned, somewhere between olive and moss — and it carries the ceremony with it. The Mehendi Green Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is that colour woven in Varanasi in Art Cotton Mix Silk, finished to the same standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. For the mehendi morning it is the most obvious choice a guest or a sister can make, and the reason it works beyond that day is the same reason it works on that one: a warm, earthy green flatters in daylight, sits well with henna on the hands, and photographs without competing with anything.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a smooth fall with the breathability a morning function genuinely needs — mehendi ceremonies run long, usually outdoors or in a crowded room, and often into the afternoon. The blend stays comfortable where a heavy Katan would not, pleats quickly, and takes the ordinary handling of a function where people sit on the floor and lean over trays of paste. The soft matte finish keeps the earthy green looking natural rather than synthetic.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. Yellow-toned greens are among the trickier shades to hold steady across a length — a slight dye drift reads as a shift towards either olive or gold rather than a change in depth — so colour consistency is a real check here. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot.
Design Inspiration: The Mehendi Palette
This is the warm, earthy end of green — closer to henna, moss and dried herbs than to the cool sage and blue-greens elsewhere in the range. Its warmth is what makes it forgiving: it flatters warm skin tones, holds up in strong daylight where cool greens can look washed, and sits naturally against gold, mustard, rust and deep maroon. It is also the traditional colour of the ceremony itself, which gives it a place in the wedding calendar that no other green in our range can claim. Within our wider Banarasi saree family it is the warmest green we weave — the opposite pole from our sea green and teal.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• The Mehendi Ceremony: Its namesake occasion — gold or oxidised jewellery, a mustard or gold blouse, and fresh flower jewellery if the function calls for it.
• Haldi & Daytime Functions: Warm enough to sit beside the yellows of a haldi morning rather than clash with them.
• Teej & Puja: Green is auspicious, and this earthy version is comfortable for long daytime ceremonies.
• Contrast Styling: Rust, mustard or deep maroon are the natural partners; ivory lightens it for a brunch or an afternoon event.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Warm greens photograph inconsistently — screens tend to push mehendi green towards either olive or gold depending on the lighting.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the tone and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Avoid bleach and harsh detergents, which strip the yellow component and leave the shade looking grey. Treat any henna marks promptly rather than letting them set.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight — warm greens fade towards khaki under prolonged light — and away from damp.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
