The Green That Works Like a Neutral
SKU-47664
Khaki, olive and moss have quietly become neutrals in the way navy and grey did a generation earlier — colours that sit under everything else rather than competing with it. Mehendi green belongs to that family. The Mehendi Green Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is a warm, muted earth-toned green on Art Cotton Mix Silk, woven in Varanasi to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. It is the piece to reach for when you want a saree that does not make a statement: appropriate at a family lunch, an office ethnic day, a temple visit or a daytime function, and never obviously dressed for any one of them.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a smooth, unfussy fall and the breathability for a full day — the practical qualities that matter in a piece meant for regular wear rather than a single occasion. The soft matte finish suits an earth tone particularly well: muted greens depend on a natural-looking surface, and a glossy synthetic pushes them straight towards looking artificial. Quick to pleat, comfortable for hours, and hard-wearing across repeat use.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. Muted mid-tones give a weaver less cover than either a deep shade or a bright one — there is no saturation to absorb an uneven beat — so the finishing checks carry real weight here. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot.
Design Inspiration: The Earth-Tone Palette
Warm, muted greens flatter almost universally, which is the quiet reason they keep returning to Indian wardrobes — they sit close to skin tones rather than against them, and they hold up in daylight where cooler greens can look washed out. The practical benefit is breadth of styling: gold and oxidised jewellery both work, and contrast blouses run from rust, mustard and maroon on the warm side to ivory and charcoal on the cool. Within our wider Banarasi saree range it is the most understated green we weave — the everyday counterpart to the ceremonial bottle greens and the cool sea green and teal.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Everyday Ethnic & Office: An ivory or charcoal blouse with minimal jewellery — one of the least fussy sarees in the range to wear to work.
• Family Functions & Lunches: Present without being dressy — gold or oxidised jewellery and a tonal blouse.
• Temple & Puja Visits: Green is auspicious and this muted version is comfortable through long daytime ceremonies.
• Contrast Styling: Rust, mustard and maroon warm it; ivory and charcoal cool it. Few sarees take both directions this easily.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Warm muted greens photograph inconsistently — screens push them towards either olive or gold depending on the lighting.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the tone and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Avoid bleach and harsh detergents, which strip the yellow component and leave the shade looking grey.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight — warm greens fade towards khaki under prolonged light — and away from damp.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
