Green, The Way Banaras Wears It
SKU-41037
Green runs deep in the Banaras palette — in temple courtyards, in Teej and Haryali celebrations, in the shalu sarees passed from mother to daughter. The Sage Green Art Silk Saree from The Panaya takes that tradition and lightens it. Woven in Art Cotton Mix Silk to the same finishing standards as our Banarasi saree collection, it is a soft, dusty green rather than a bright bottle or emerald — the shade that works for a mid-week puja, a colleague’s mehendi, a Teej gathering and a quiet family dinner, without needing to be dry-cleaned back to life after every outing.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
The blend puts silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base, which is what gives this saree its two useful qualities at once: a smooth, weighted fall through the pleats, and enough breathability to survive a long Indian afternoon. It is a more practical cloth than pure Katan or tissue silk — less prone to creasing at the shoulder, faster to drape, and forgiving of the everyday handling a saree gets when it leaves the cupboard often rather than once a year.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Made in the same Varanasi weaving cluster that produces our finer silks, and checked to the same standard before it is packed: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot, so the stitched blouse holds exactly the same green as the drape — an unglamorous detail that decides whether the finished look reads as considered or improvised.
Design Inspiration: The Sage Green Palette
Sage sits between the deep festive greens and the grey-toned neutrals — close to the colour of tulsi leaves after rain, and calm enough to wear in daylight without competing with the occasion. Where a bright green demands heavy gold to balance it, sage takes almost anything: antique gold, oxidised silver, pearls, or a single strand of green beads. Against our wider Banarasi saree range, it is the piece for someone who wants a traditional colour without a traditional weight.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Teej, Haryali & Puja: The traditional home for green. Pair with gold-toned bangles, a matching or gold blouse, and jhumkas for festival mornings and temple visits.
• Mehendi & Sangeet Guest Wear: A mustard, rust or deep maroon contrast blouse with oxidised jewellery makes this a standout guest look without overshadowing the bride.
• Office Ethnic & Daily Wear: Keep it plain — an ivory or beige cotton-silk blouse, minimal jewellery, hair tied back — for a saree that carries through a full working day.
• Building a Wardrobe: An easy second or third saree for anyone who already owns the reds and golds and wants something they will actually reach for more often.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the green tone and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Avoid bleach and harsh detergents, which dull green dyes quickly.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a breathable cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight — prolonged light exposure fades green shades faster than most — and away from damp.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to avoid permanent crease lines, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
