Vijayawada has been a market before it was anything else — a river crossing on the Krishna where goods have been priced, argued over and moved for centuries. It shows in how people here shop for silk. Three certifications, not a sticker
The GI tag confirms Varanasi origin, the Silk Mark confirms pure mulberry silk, and the Handloom Mark confirms hand weaving. We can show you the registration for any saree you are considering.
No middlemen between you and the karigar
We work with the same weaving families in Lallapura, Madanpura, Alaipura and Jaitpura across four generations. Ask which household wove your saree and we will tell you.
Handwoven, with the marks to prove it
One saree takes two weeks to a month and a half on a pit loom. Turn it over: slightly raised threads and small variations between motifs are the signature of hand weaving, and a machine copy has neither.
Zari that ages instead of shedding
Genuine zari feels faintly rough and metallic and darkens gently over years of wear. Plastic-coated imitation feels slippery and leaves a gold tint on your fingers.

Home functions with turmeric, oil and a great deal of movement. This is not the moment for heavy zari, and anything you love should not be in the room.

Nischitartham & sangeet
Photographed heavily, but you will be on your feet for hours. You want visible richness with manageable weight.

Where we would tell you not to buy a Banarasi
For the mangala snanam and the haldi, buy something inexpensive and local. Turmeric and oil stain silk permanently, and no dry cleaner in Vijayawada or anywhere else will fully lift it from real zari. We would rather sell you three sarees you actually wear again than four with one ruined on day one.
Vijayawada, specifically
The festival calendar on the Krishna
Vijayawada's saree year has a rhythm that is quite unlike the North Indian one, and it is worth planning around. Sankranti in January is the largest family occasion of the year, when houses fill and everyone is photographed. Ugadi follows in spring. Varalakshmi Vratam in Sravana masam is the single most saree-focused day on the calendar — traditionally cream, off-white and gold, worn seated for the puja. Then Dasara arrives at Indrakeeladri, and for nine nights the city dresses in deeper colour: red, dark pink, orange, green, with Meena work rather than plain gold zari.
That spread suits a Banarasi Saree collection better than a single-weave wardrobe does. A cream Katan with fine gold booti covers Varalakshmi Vratam and any temple function for years. A cut-work Katan or Kora in orange or green carries Sankranti and the Dasara nights without the weight of full zari coverage. And the one heavy Kadwa piece stays for weddings, where it belongs.
One practical note on the delta climate: Vijayawada gets hot and the air near the river carries moisture. Store silk wrapped in cotton muslin rather than plastic, keep it out of direct sunlight, and refold along a different line every few months so the zari does not crease permanently in one place.

A Telugu wedding usually runs across five or six saree occasions: pellikuthuru and mangala snanam in the morning, the muhurtham itself, the reception, and often a Satyanarayana vratam the next day. In practice that means one heavy Katan silk for the muhurtham, a tissue or lighter Katan for the reception, and two or three lighter Kora, Georgette or cut-work pieces for the morning functions and the vratam. You do not need six heavy sarees, and any seller telling you otherwise is selling rather than advising.
Which Banarasi colours suit Varalakshmi Vratam and Dasara in Vijayawada?
For Varalakshmi Vratam, off-white, cream and gold with fine zari booti are the most traditional and photograph beautifully against gold jewellery. For the Dasara Sharannavaratri days at Indrakeeladri, deeper shades work better — red, dark pink, orange and green, with Meena colour work rather than plain gold zari. How do I check that a Banarasi saree is genuine handloom before ordering?
Every Panaya saree carries GI certification, the Silk Mark and the Handloom Mark, covering origin, silk purity and hand weaving. You can also check the weave yourself: on real handloom the reverse looks close to the front, with slightly raised threads and small variations between motifs, while a power-loom copy has a flat, printed-looking back with identical repeats. Real zari feels faintly rough and metallic; imitation zari feels slippery and can leave a gold tint on your fingers.
What does a genuine Banarasi saree cost in Vijayawada?
Georgette and Organza Banarasi sarees begin around ₹21,000, Kora silk sits between ₹35,000 and ₹45,000, and handwoven Katan silk with heavy zari runs from ₹50,000 upward depending on the weave and zari coverage. Anything sold as pure silk with real zari below ₹8,000 is almost certainly a power-loom copy. You pay the same price in Vijayawada as in our Varanasi showroom, and shipping is free.
