Varanasi to the USA

A Varanasi loom, an American wardrobe

From New Jersey and New York to California, Texas, Illinois and Georgia, the United States is home to one of the largest Indian communities outside India — and wedding season, Diwali and Navratri rarely go by without a hand-woven silk saree taking centre stage. At The Panaya, we bring that tradition directly from the weaving lanes of Varanasi to wardrobes across the country, so you never have to compromise on authenticity just because you have settled thousands of miles from home.

The Panaya is not a reseller. We are Kamalya Textiles, based in Chowkaghat, Varanasi, working directly with karigar families in the weaving lanes of Lallapura, Madanpura, Alaipura and Jaitpura. Every Banarasi Saree we send to the USA is woven by hand on a pit loom, in pure mulberry silk with real zari, and carries three separate certifications: the GI tag for Varanasi origin, the Silk Mark for silk purity, and the Handloom Mark for genuine hand weaving. Many of our American customers first found us through family in India, and have since become repeat buyers themselves.

Because you are ordering from more than 12,000 kilometres away, we make the checking easy. Ask us for close-up photographs of the pallu, the border or the reverse of the fabric, or book a live video call from the workshop at a time that suits your US time zone before you decide. Nothing is dispatched until you are completely sure.

Chosen for the USA

Six weaves for every American occasion

A structured Katan for the winter wedding hall, lighter Kora and Organza for summer garden functions, and Tissue silk for the reception. Product images, current prices and availability are pulled directly from Shopify.

Why Panaya

What you are actually buying

Power-loom copies are sold as 'Banarasi' every day, in the USA as much as anywhere. Here is how ours are different, and how you can check for yourself.

GI · SILK MARK · HANDLOOM MARK

Three certifications, not a sticker

The GI tag confirms Varanasi origin, the Silk Mark confirms pure mulberry silk, and the Handloom Mark confirms it was woven by hand. We can show you the registration for any saree you are considering.

DIRECT FROM THE LOOM

No middlemen between you and the karigar

We work with weaving families in Lallapura, Madanpura, Alaipura and Jaitpura — the same families for four generations. If you ask which household wove your saree, we will tell you.

15–45 DAYS ON THE LOOM

Handwoven, with the marks to prove it

A single saree takes between two weeks and a month and a half on a pit loom. Turn it over and you will see slightly raised threads and small irregularities between motifs — the signature of hand weaving, absent on a machine copy.

REAL ZARI

Zari that ages instead of shedding

Genuine zari feels faintly rough and metallic and darkens gently over the years. Plastic-coated imitation feels slippery and leaves a gold tint on your fingers. We will walk you through the test on a call.

SEE BEFORE BUYING

A video call from the workshop

Buying silk this far from Varanasi should not be a leap of faith. We show you the drape, the zari shine and the true colour in daylight on WhatsApp video, timed to suit your US time zone, and send extra photographs of any detail you ask for.

HONEST PRICING

Priced by the weave, not the zip code

You pay the same in the USA as a buyer standing in our Varanasi showroom. International shipping is calculated transparently at checkout, and the price reflects the silk, the zari and the hours on the loom — nothing else.

The USA, specifically

Weddings, Diwali, and two very different wedding seasons

The Indian diaspora across the USA is concentrated around a handful of major hubs — New Jersey and New York, the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California, greater Houston and Dallas in Texas, Chicago, and metro Atlanta — each with its own temples, community associations and wedding halls. From engagement functions and mehendi evenings to grand banquet-hall receptions and Diwali or Navratri celebrations organised by local associations, a properly woven Banarasi Saree is still the piece most families reach for when the occasion matters.

Unlike India, the USA effectively runs two wedding seasons. Winter functions — often indoors in heated banquet halls between November and February — suit a structured Katan or Tissue silk that holds its pleats and catches the light beautifully under evening lighting, paired easily with a shawl for the walk in from the cold. Summer garden weddings and outdoor receptions between May and September call for lighter Kora, Organza or Georgette silk that breathes and is easier to wear for a full day outdoors.

One practical note for shipping this far: silk travels well when packed correctly, but it should still be unwrapped from its transit packaging as soon as it arrives, aired briefly, and stored in cotton muslin rather than plastic. Dry indoor heating through the American winter can be harsh on silk over time, so keep sarees away from direct heating vents and refold along a different line every few months so the zari never creases permanently in one place.

  • Wedding & reception: Katan silk in red, maroon or wine, with heavy Kadwa or Shikargah zari work.
  • Sangeet & evening functions: Tissue silk and Meena Jaal weaves — light to wear, luminous under evening light.
  • Diwali & Navratri: Gold and cream Kora silk with fine booti work.
  • Summer & outdoor functions: Organza and pastel Kora — sheer, crisp and easy to wear all day.
  • Gifting: A certified handwoven saree for a mother, sister or daughter-in-law, sent with the certification papers.

Questions from US shoppers

Before you order

Do you deliver Banarasi sarees across the USA, and how long does it take?

Yes. We ship internationally to every state, including major Indian-community hubs like New Jersey, New York, California, Texas, Illinois, Georgia and Washington. Orders are dispatched from our Varanasi workshop by tracked air courier and usually reach US addresses in 7–12 working days, with tracking shared as soon as the parcel leaves.

How do I know the Banarasi saree I buy in the USA is genuine?

Every Panaya saree carries GI certification, the Silk Mark and the Handloom Mark — three separate government-recognised marks covering origin, silk purity and handloom weaving. Before you order we can show you the reverse of the fabric, the zari and the drape on a live video call timed to suit your US time zone, and explain the back-weave and zari checks our weavers use.

Will I need to pay customs duty on a Banarasi saree shipped to the USA?

Most personal shipments to US addresses fall under the CBP's de minimis allowance and clear without additional duty, though thresholds and rules can change and vary by shipment value. We include a correct commercial invoice with every parcel and are happy to confirm current rules with you before you order.

Which Banarasi silk works best for US wedding season?

For indoor winter wedding season and evening receptions, structured Katan and Tissue silk hold their pleats beautifully under banquet-hall lighting. For summer garden weddings, mehendi mornings, or Diwali and Navratri events, lighter Kora, Organza or Georgette silk is easier to wear for a full day outdoors.

What does a genuine Banarasi saree cost for buyers in the USA?

Lightweight Organza and Georgette Banarasi sarees begin around ₹21,000, Kora silk sits between ₹35,000 and ₹45,000, and handwoven Katan silk with heavy zari runs from ₹50,000 upward depending on weave and zari coverage. For the current selling price, always check the live Shopify product page.

Can I see the saree on a video call before ordering from the USA?

Yes. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 99802 45549 with your preferred US time zone and we will arrange a live video call from our Varanasi workshop, show you the saree in daylight, send extra photographs of the pallu, border and reverse side, and help you match a blouse and colour for your occasion.
