Visakhapatnam is not a single wardrobe. The port, the steel plant, the Eastern Naval Command and the IT corridor out at Rushikonda have brought in families from every part of the country, and it shows at any Vizag wedding — a Telugu muhurtham in one hall, a Bengali or Odia ceremony down the road, a Punjabi reception the same evening. Three certifications, not a sticker
The GI tag confirms Varanasi origin, the Silk Mark confirms pure mulberry silk, and the Handloom Mark confirms hand weaving. We can show you the registration for any saree you are considering.
No middlemen between you and the karigar
We work with the same weaving families in Lallapura, Madanpura, Alaipura and Jaitpura across four generations. Ask which household wove your saree and we will tell you.
Handwoven, with the marks to prove it
One saree takes two weeks to a month and a half on a pit loom. Turn it over: slightly raised threads and small variations between motifs are the signature of hand weaving, and a machine copy has neither.
Zari that ages instead of shedding
Genuine zari feels faintly rough and metallic and darkens gently over years of wear. Plastic-coated imitation feels slippery and leaves a gold tint on your fingers.

What coastal air does to real zari
Nobody selling silk in a coastal city likes to raise this, so we will. Salt-laden air dulls genuine zari faster than inland air does — and understanding why turns out to be the clearest authenticity test there is.
Real Banarasi zari is metal: silver thread, gilded and wound around a silk core. Metal reacts with its environment, and the humid, salt-carrying air along the Bay of Bengal speeds that up. Over years, zari on a saree kept in a sea-facing flat in Lawsons Bay will deepen in tone sooner than the same saree kept in Hyderabad.
Here is the part worth holding on to: this is evidence, not a defect. Imitation zari is polyester film with a metallic coating. It never tarnishes, never deepens, and looks identical in year ten — because there is no metal in it to react. Gently dulled real zari can be cleaned and restored by a specialist. Plastic zari cannot be restored, because there is nothing there to restore. If a seller promises you zari that will look brand new forever in Vizag, they are describing polyester.
Do
- Wrap the saree in cotton muslin so the silk can breathe
- Store it in an inner cupboard, away from sea-facing windows and balconies
- Air it for an hour every few weeks, out of direct sun
- Refold along a different line every few months so the zari never creases in one place
- Keep a silica sachet in the cupboard through the monsoon months

- Seal it in a plastic cover — trapped moisture is worse than open air
- Hang it on a sea-facing balcony to air, however convenient
- Iron zari directly, or use a steam setting on it
- Use household metal polish or any home remedy on the zari
- Store it folded the same way for years without checking

Do not attempt it at home. Send us a photograph on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether it needs professional zari restoration, a gentle airing, or nothing at all — including when the answer is that the saree looks exactly as a twenty-year-old handloom piece should.

Vizag weddings increasingly happen outdoors. The resorts along Rushikonda and out towards Bheemili have made the sunset reception a standard part of the plan here in a way it simply is not in an inland city — and an outdoor evening by the water is a different brief for a saree than a closed banquet hall. Sea breeze catches a heavy pallu. Humidity makes a dense weave cling. A lighter tissue silk, Kora, or a cut-work Katan carries the same visual richness with far less to manage.
The indoor occasions still call for weight. A muhurtham in a hall, a morning at Simhachalam, a Varalakshmi Vratam puja — these are where a full Kadwa or Meena Jaal Banarasi Saree earns the hours that went into it. Every Panaya saree carries GI certification, the Silk Mark and the Handloom Mark, covering origin, silk purity and hand weaving. You can also check the weave yourself: on real handloom the reverse looks close to the front, with slightly raised threads and small variations between motifs, while a power-loom copy has a flat, printed-looking back with identical repeats. Real zari feels faintly rough and metallic; imitation zari feels slippery and can leave a gold tint on your fingers.
What does a genuine Banarasi saree cost in Visakhapatnam?
