The Green That Behaves Like a Blue
SKU-47598
Most greens in an Indian wardrobe are warm — leaf, parrot, bottle, all of them leaning towards yellow. Sea green goes the other way. It sits on the blue side of the family, in the firozi and peacock territory that Banaras weavers have drawn on for as long as the motifs have existed. The Sea Green Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is that cool, water-toned green on Art Cotton Mix Silk, woven in Varanasi to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. The practical consequence: it is the one green that takes silver and oxidised jewellery as naturally as gold, which doubles the number of looks it can carry.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a smooth, weighted fall with the breathability for a full day — well suited to a cool shade that reads best in natural light. The soft matte finish keeps the colour looking like water rather than glass; blue-greens are among the shades most quickly cheapened by a high-shine synthetic surface, where the tone tips towards something metallic. Quick to pleat, light on the shoulder, and hard-wearing enough for repeat use.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. Blue-greens are among the harder shades to hold consistent across a full length, since a small dye drift reads as a shift from green towards blue rather than as a change in depth — so colour consistency is the check that matters most here. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot.
Design Inspiration: The Sea Green Palette
Sea green belongs to the same family as firoza, the turquoise stone that runs through North Indian jewellery, and to the peacock blues and greens that fill Banarasi motif books. It is cool, calm and a little unexpected — recognisably traditional in origin, yet reading as contemporary on a plain ground. Silver, oxidised and pearl jewellery all suit it; gold warms it towards the ceremonial. Contrast blouses in ivory, coral, deep teal or gold each take it somewhere different. Within our wider Banarasi saree range it is the coolest of our greens — the bridge between the green family and the blues, and the piece to choose when a leaf green feels too expected.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Daytime & Outdoor Functions: Reads best in natural light — pair with silver or pearl jewellery and an ivory blouse.
• Festive & Puja Wear: Green is auspicious and this is its coolest version — gold jewellery shifts it towards the traditional.
• The Coral Contrast: Coral or rust against sea green is the strongest and least common pairing this saree offers — worth trying before the safe ivory.
• Office Ethnic & Formal: Calm enough for work with a plain blouse and minimal jewellery.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Blue-greens photograph unpredictably — screens tend to push the shade towards either green or blue, so the piece in your hands may read cooler or warmer than the image.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the tone and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately and never bleach — blue-green dyes lose their blue component first, leaving the shade looking flat and yellowish.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. Prolonged light exposure shifts sea green towards a duller, greener tone.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
