The Peacock’s Own Colour

SKU-47620

Open any Banarasi motif book and the peacock is there — in the buta, along the border, filling the pallu. The bird brought its colour with it, and teal has been part of the Varanasi palette ever since. The Teal Green Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is that shade at full depth: a saturated blue-green on Art Cotton Mix Silk, woven in Varanasi to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. Its practical advantage is that it survives the evening. A bottle or forest green collapses towards black once the lights come down; teal keeps enough blue in it to stay legible as a colour all night.

The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk

Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a weighted, even fall — necessary on a saturated shade, where the drape itself carries the look and any irregularity in the fold shows. The soft matte finish holds the teal as depth rather than shine; blue-greens at this intensity are quick to look metallic on a glossy synthetic surface. Breathable enough for a long function and fast to pleat.

The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster

Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. Saturated blue-greens are among the hardest shades to hold steady across a full length — a slight dye drift reads as a swing between green and blue rather than a change in depth — so colour consistency is the check that matters most on a piece like this. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot.

Design Inspiration: The Teal Palette

Teal is the jewel end of the blue-green family — deeper and more concentrated than a sea green, and closer to the peacock and firoza tones that recur through North Indian textile and jewellery traditions. It is one of the few shades that reads as fully traditional and fully contemporary at once, which is why it turns up equally at temple ceremonies and at city receptions. Gold and antique gold give it a classical reading; silver and oxidised sharpen it. Contrast blouses in gold, coral, ivory or deep wine all hold their own against it. Within our wider Banarasi saree range it is the deepest of our blue-greens — the evening counterpart to our paler sea green.

Occasion & Styling Guide

Evening Weddings & Receptions: Holds its colour under artificial light where deep greens go flat — antique gold jewellery, gold or tonal blouse.

Festive & Temple Occasions: Traditional and auspicious, with the depth to carry a formal ceremony.

A Distinctive Alternative to Bottle Green: The same ceremonial weight, but visibly a colour rather than a near-black.

The Coral Contrast: Coral or rust against deep teal is the boldest pairing this saree offers; gold is the safe one.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed

Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Deep blue-greens photograph unpredictably — screens push teal towards either green or blue, so the piece in your hands may read differently from the image.

Browse the full Banarasi Saree Collection to see the rest of the range — everyday art silk drapes at one end, pure Katan silk heirlooms at the other.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions

Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the depth and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — deep teals bleed heavily onto lighter fabrics — and never bleach, which strips the blue component first and leaves the shade looking dull and green.

Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. Prolonged light exposure shifts teal towards a flatter green.

Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, which show sharply on deep shades, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
