The Saree Three Generations Can Wear
SKU-47621
Most colours carry an age. Pastels skew young, brights skew younger still, and the deepest shades can add years to someone who did not ask for them. Maroon does none of that — it is the rare shade that reads as appropriate on a bride’s younger sister, her mother and her grandmother at the same function. The Maroon Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is that colour at full depth, woven in Varanasi in Art Cotton Mix Silk to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. It is the reason maroon is the safest saree in India to buy for somebody else: nobody it is given to will feel the colour was chosen for a different woman.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a weighted, even fall with the breathability to last a full ceremony. The blend also suits the way maroon is actually worn — across long, crowded, warm functions rather than short ones — and it stays comfortable where a heavy Katan would become a burden by the third hour. The soft matte finish keeps the depth looking rich; deep reds are quick to look synthetic on a glossy surface. Fast to pleat and forgiving of repeat wear.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot — which matters on a deep, even shade, where any variation in depth between blouse and drape reads as a mismatch rather than a contrast.
Design Inspiration: The Maroon Palette
Maroon holds a particular position in the Indian calendar: auspicious enough for ceremony, restrained enough not to claim the bride’s red, and formal without being severe. It is also the most photographed colour at any Indian wedding, and it holds up under every kind of light — daylight, tubelight, evening lamps — without shifting the way brighter reds and pinks do. Gold is its natural partner and needs no thought. Within our wider Banarasi saree range we also weave this shade as a dual-tone piece, where a second colour is carried through the weave to give the maroon movement under changing light.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Weddings, at Any Age: Appropriate for the bride’s sister, mother and grandmother alike — gold jewellery and a gold or tonal blouse.
• Karva Chauth, Diwali & Puja: Traditional and auspicious, with the depth to carry an evening ceremony.
• Gifting Without Asking: The safest saree in India to buy for someone else — blouse piece included.
• Contrast Styling: Gold, mustard or bottle green sharpens it for a sangeet or a festive evening.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the depth of colour and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — deep maroons bleed onto lighter fabrics — and never bleach.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. Keep well away from pale sarees in the same fold.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, which show sharply on deep shades, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
