India’s Favourite Blouse Colour, as a Saree
SKU-47622
Ask any tailor in Varanasi which blouse colour gets stitched most often against a bright saree and the answer will be bottle green. It is the standard contrast for a rani pink, a tomato red, a mustard, an ivory — the shade that makes a warm colour look considered instead of loud. The Bottle Green Art Silk Saree from The Panaya simply reverses the arrangement: the same deep green, woven in Varanasi in Art Cotton Mix Silk to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection, now as the drape itself. Everything that worked against it as a blouse works against it as a saree, which makes this one of the easiest pieces in the range to style from a wardrobe you already own.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a weighted, architectural fall — the quality that carries a very deep shade, where there is no brightness to distract from an uneven drape. The soft matte finish is what keeps bottle green looking like a traditional silk rather than a costume fabric; at this depth a high-shine synthetic reads as plastic almost immediately. Comfortable through a long evening, quick to pleat, and durable enough for repeat wear.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. On a ground this dark every motif sits in high contrast, so irregular spacing that a mid-tone would absorb shows plainly — placement matters more here than on a lighter shade. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot.
Design Inspiration: The Bottle Green Palette
Bottle green is the deepest and most traditional member of the green family — the shalu green of trousseau sarees, the colour that has stood opposite maroon in the Banaras palette for generations. It is ceremonial without being bridal, which makes it a natural choice for family who want full formality without wearing red. Gold and antique gold are its obvious partners, and contrast blouses in gold, rani pink, mustard or ivory each pull it in a different direction. Within our wider Banarasi saree range it is the most classical of our greens — deeper and more formal than the sage and mid greens, and the plain counterpart to the dual-tone dark greens we weave.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Weddings & Receptions: Gold jewellery against the dark ground — full ceremonial weight without wearing red.
• Festive & Puja Wear: Green is auspicious and this is its most formal version — traditional jhumkas and bangles are enough.
• Style It From What You Own: Any blouse that already pairs with a bright saree — rani pink, mustard, gold, ivory — works here in reverse.
• A Note on Evening Light: Bottle green deepens towards near-black under low lighting. If you want a green that stays visibly green all evening, our teal is the shade for that.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Very deep greens photograph close to black — the piece in your hands will read greener in daylight than it does on screen.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the depth and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — deep greens bleed onto lighter fabrics — and never bleach, which dulls green dyes faster than most.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. Dark grounds show lint readily, so keep the wrapping cloth clean.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, which show sharply on dark shades, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
