Aubergine — A Colour That Works Like a Neutral
SKU-47619
There is a point where a purple gets deep enough to stop reading as purple and start behaving like a dark neutral — the shade of baingan, of ripe jamun, of a sky about ten minutes after sunset. The Dark Purple Art Silk Saree from The Panaya sits exactly there: an aubergine so deep it anchors an outfit the way navy or black would, woven in Varanasi in Art Cotton Mix Silk to the same finishing standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. In a dim room it reads as a dark, formal ground; step into the light and the purple returns. That double life is the whole appeal — the authority of a dark saree without the flatness of one.
The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk
Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a weighted, architectural fall — the quality that carries a very dark shade, where there is no colour brightness to distract from an uneven drape. The soft matte finish is what keeps an aubergine looking expensive: at this depth a high-shine synthetic reads as plastic almost immediately, while a muted surface holds the colour as density. Comfortable through a long evening and quick to pleat, with enough structure to hold a sharp pallu.
The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster
Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. On a ground this dark, motif placement carries unusual weight — every element sits in high contrast against the base, so irregular spacing that a mid-tone would absorb is plainly visible. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot.
Design Inspiration: The Aubergine Palette
Deep purple has signalled status for as long as the dye has been difficult to make, and aubergine is its most restrained form — rich without brightness, formal without severity. It sits comfortably where black would feel austere and navy would feel corporate, which makes it a useful third option for evening dressing. Gold and antique gold warm it; silver and oxidised sharpen it into something more modern. Contrast blouses in gold, wine, deep teal or ivory all register clearly against it. Within our wider Banarasi saree range this is the deepest point of the purple family — several steps past our lavender, and the plain counterpart to our dual-tone purple.
Occasion & Styling Guide
• Evening Weddings & Receptions: Antique gold jewellery against the dark ground — formal, and distinct from the room’s reds and golds.
• A Third Option to Black and Navy: The same evening authority with colour still present — useful when black feels too severe for a family occasion.
• Festive Wear: Diwali and Karva Chauth — traditional jhumkas and bangles are enough against a shade this deep.
• Contrast Styling: Gold or ivory for a classical reading; deep teal or wine for something less expected.

The Panaya Promise: Authenticity Guaranteed
Every Panaya saree is listed exactly as it is woven, at every price point. This is an art silk / blended mix saree — no inflated fabric claim, and no substitution between the piece described here and the piece that reaches your door. Each saree is sourced directly from our Varanasi weaving units and inspected for colour consistency, zari finish, fall and measurement before despatch, with the length, width and blouse piece confirmed against the specifications above. Very dark purples are difficult to photograph — screens often render aubergine closer to black than it appears in daylight.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions
• Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the depth of colour and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — deep purples bleed heavily — and never bleach, which turns the shade a dull brown rather than lightening it.
• Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp. Dark grounds show lint and stray fibres readily, so keep the wrapping cloth clean.
• Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, which show sharply on dark shades, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
