Gulabi — The Colour Named After a Flower

SKU-47314

There is a reason the Hindi word for pink comes from the word for rose. Gulabi is not an abstract colour name but a description — the shade of the flower itself, neither pale nor electric. The Pink Art Silk Saree from The Panaya is that colour woven in Varanasi in Art Cotton Mix Silk, finished to the same standards as the rest of our Banarasi saree collection. It is the most versatile pink we make: bright enough for a festive afternoon, soft enough for a temple visit, and appropriate at almost any age or occasion — the pink you choose when you want the colour itself rather than a statement about it.

The Fabric: Art Cotton Mix Silk

Silk-like yarns over a cotton-mix base give the saree a smooth, weighted fall with the breathability to last through a full day — useful for a shade that suits both a morning function and an evening one. The soft matte finish keeps the pink reading as a clean, even colour rather than a glossy one; mid-tone pinks are particularly quick to look artificial on a high-shine synthetic surface. Quick to pleat, light on the shoulder, and durable enough for repeat wear.

The Craftsmanship: Woven in the Varanasi Cluster

Produced in the same Varanasi weaving cluster as our finer silks and inspected to the same standard before packing: even selvedges, consistent motif placement across the field, secure zari-toned detailing and a clean reverse with no straggling floats. The blouse piece is cut from matching Art Cotton Mix Silk from the same lot — which matters on a mid-tone shade, where the eye judges the depth of the blouse against the drape directly rather than against the surrounding light.

Design Inspiration: The Rose Pink Palette

Rose pink is the balancing point of the family — warmer than a powder pink, softer than a rani, and without the blue edge of a fuchsia. That central position is its advantage: it flatters across skin tones, photographs cleanly in daylight and under evening light alike, and pairs comfortably with both gold and silver where the extremes of the family tend to demand one or the other. Contrast blouses in bottle green, maroon or ivory all sit naturally against it. Within our wider Banarasi saree range it is the midpoint of a family that also runs to pale baby pink, deep rani and electric hot pink — the version for someone who wants pink without picking a side.

Occasion & Styling Guide

Festive & Family Occasions: Teej, Diwali, engagements and family lunches — gold jewellery and a tonal or gold blouse.

Daytime and Evening Alike: Its real strength: bright enough not to wash out at noon, soft enough not to glare under evening light.

Puja & Temple Wear: Appropriate and comfortable across ages, with minimal jewellery.

Contrast Styling: A bottle green or maroon blouse is the classical pairing; ivory keeps it light for daytime.

Heritage Care & Storage Instructions

Cleaning: Dry clean for the first few washes to hold the tone and the zari finish; a mild cold hand-wash with a gentle detergent is safe thereafter. Wash separately — pinks bleed onto lighter fabrics — and never bleach.

Storage: Store flat, wrapped in a breathable cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and damp, and away from strong perfumes or deodorants.

Maintenance: Refold along different lines every few weeks to prevent permanent crease lines, and press on low heat with a cotton cloth in between.
