Nellore sits on the highway between Chennai and Vijayawada, and that position has shaped how the city shops. When a wedding is coming, plenty of families here still make the drive — down to Chennai, up to Vijayawada, or across to Tirupati — because the big showrooms are there and Nellore has historically been treated as a stop rather than a destination. Nellore, specifically

Tirumala, the Ranganatha temple, and a coastal cupboard

Nellore's calendar leans on temple occasions more than most cities we ship to. Tirumala is close enough that a great many local weddings begin or end there, which means a saree chosen here often has to work for a hill temple morning as well as a reception hall — two very different jobs. For the temple, traditional colour and restraint travel better: off-white, cream and gold with fine booti, in a weave you can sit in comfortably for hours. Save the full jaal and heavy zari for the muhurtham and the evening.

Closer to home, the Ranganatha Swamy temple's festival days, Varalakshmi Vratam in Sravana masam and Sankranti in January are the occasions our Nellore orders cluster around. A Banarasi Saree earns its keep across all of them, because a single well-chosen Katan or Kora carries the temple mornings and the family functions for years rather than one season.

One practical note for this coast: Nellore is warm and the air carries moisture from the Bay, particularly through the monsoon and cyclone months. Store silk wrapped in cotton muslin rather than plastic, keep it in an inner cupboard away from sea-facing windows, keep a silica sachet alongside it, and refold along a different line every few months so the zari never creases permanently in one place.

How do I check that a Banarasi saree is genuine handloom before ordering?

Every Panaya saree carries GI certification, the Silk Mark and the Handloom Mark, covering origin, silk purity and hand weaving. You can also check the weave yourself: on real handloom the reverse looks close to the front, with slightly raised threads and small variations between motifs, while a power-loom copy has a flat, printed-looking back with identical repeats. Real zari feels faintly rough and metallic; imitation zari feels slippery and can leave a gold tint on your fingers.

What does a genuine Banarasi saree cost in Nellore?

Georgette and Organza Banarasi sarees begin around ₹21,000, Kora silk sits between ₹35,000 and ₹45,000, and handwoven Katan silk with heavy zari runs from ₹50,000 upward depending on the weave and zari coverage. Anything sold as pure silk with real zari below ₹8,000 is almost certainly a power-loom copy. You pay the same price in Nellore as in our Varanasi showroom, and shipping is free.
